Alzheimer’s WA Welcomes New Board Member

Alzheimer's WA Board

Western Australia’s leading dementia care organisation, Alzheimer’s WA, is delighted to announce the appointment of Vera Riley, Occupational Therapist specialising in aged care and dementia to its Board.

Ms Riley brings over 40 years of experience in occupational therapy to the Board, having worked in the public health systems of both Australia and the United States, gaining expertise in neurology, including stroke rehabilitation and aged care.

Alzheimer’s WA Chairman Professor Warren Harding AM enthusiastically welcomes Ms Riley to the Board: “Vera brings many years of experience in the dementia sector. Her skills and knowledge will be a tremendous asset to the skills-based Board, particularly as we grow our NDIS services and expand our services after yet another successful year.

In addition, Ms Riley has had a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring occupational therapists and occupational therapy students. She has held a tutoring position at Curtin University and has taught occupational therapy courses interstate.” he said.

Since 2012, Vera has provided occupational therapy services to the Memory Clinic in the department of Geriatric Acute and Rehabilitation Medicine at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Vera’s role in the Memory Clinic aims to determine the person’s ability in daily living activities, the impact of cognitive impairment and to identify the resources and strategies required to promote the person to continue to perform in daily life.

Acting Alzheimer’s WA CEO Nigel Holmes is excited that Vera will provide valuable guidance for the organisation’s allied health team. “Vera’s experience and expertise will be of huge benefit to our current team of occupational therapists and I look forward to increasing our knowledge base and seeing the benefits for our clients.”

Vera was previously a Board member from 1987 to 1989, since then service development has seen significant changes and growth with CHSP, HCP and NDIS. Vera has seen a major shift of role for Alzheimer’sWA into early detection, early intervention, and more respite care in the community.

Riley joins Prof Warren Harding AM, Dr Sean Maher, Majo Merriam, Gemma McGrath, Matthew Budge, Susan Downes and CEO Ella Dachs on the Board. This appointment takes effect January 1, 2024.
