Alzheimer's WA has exciting news to share!
We are delighted to announce a new location for our Memory Café program. The Little Pantry, located at 206 Nicholson Road in Shenton Park has generously offered to host a monthly Memory Café, providing a cozy and inviting space for people living with dementia, their families, and caregivers to come together and enjoy a cup of coffee while engaging in meaningful conversations. The Opening will be on Friday, 25th August 2023 at 9.30 am with special guests Dr Katrina Stratton MLA Member for Nedlands and David McMullen Mayor – City of Subiaco.
Rosalina Cardillo, the café’s manager, understands the importance of community support firsthand. Having had a grandfather who was living with dementia, she witnessed the positive impact that a supportive village can have on both the person living with dementia and their caregiver. Rosalina firmly believes that individuals living with dementia should not be underestimated and should be able to live their lives and stay socially engaged as much as possible. She emphasised the significance of attending a Memory Café, as it allows for a better quality of life by connecting with like-minded individuals in a familiar and comforting environment.
Alzheimer’s WA CEO, Ella Dachs communicated that Alzheimer’s WA is proud to support The Little Pantry’s Memory Café, with the organisation’s dedicated staff and volunteers attending to provide additional support. Memory Cafés serve as warm and friendly spaces for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers to socialise, stay active, share experiences and information, and can help reduce feelings of social isolation.
Professor. Warren Harding, AM, Chairman of Alzheimer’s WA, highlighted the immense value of community connection for the 48,000 West Australians living with dementia. It is a human right to age with dignity, in the same community where people lived, where their children go to work and grandchildren go to school. Social engagement can delay cognitive decline as well as help cognitive re-enablement. He greatly appreciated the passionate commitment of Dr Katrina Stratton, Labor Member for Nedlands to locate and work with Rosalina and Alzheimer’s WA to enable this new Café to open. The role of State and Local Government is critically important to the creation of more dementia friendly communities, Professor Harding said.
The Memory Café at The Little Pantry, conveniently located at 206 Nicholson Road, will be held once a month on a Monday, starting from 9:30 -11.00 am . If you are interested in attending, we extend a warm invitation to join us for your first coffee on the house!
