Inspired by her nan’s journey with dementia, Fremantle resident Betina and partner Mic, founders of Off The Grid 365, have organised a month of walk challenges across Western Australia to help raise funds and awareness of dementia during September.
Betina said she experienced first hand the impact Alzheimer’s disease had, not only on her grandmother, but also family members who provided care and support.
“I lost my nan in 2018. I remember how happy she was when we would visit and take her to Centennial Park in Sydney for a cup of tea. She loved being outdoors and seeing the birds,” she said.
Betina and partner Mic turned their love of walking and exploring the great outdoors into Off The Grid 365, an organisation that offers guided walking experiences and pack-free holidays throughout Australia.
“We created Off The Grid 365 to help others improve their physical and mental health by getting outdoors, walking amazing trails, connecting with nature and even gaining the confidence to complete overnight trips. Our vision is to change people’s lives one walk at a time,” she said.
It was this connection that prompted Betina and Mic to reach out to Alzheimer’s WA and see if there was any way they could help. They are now hosting 12 fundraising events throughout September, Dementia Awareness Month, and have set a goal to raise $90,000 for Alzheimer’s WA.
“Dementia impacts the entire community. We wanted to create a broad range of events so that everyone could get involved with fundraising for Alzheimer’s WA in September,” she said.
“Every walking experience is truly unique and our aim is to capture the imagination of a broad audience. Whether you have three days to indulge in the Margaret River Region on the Cape to Cape Track, or want to really test your endurance on an epic 40km Bibbulmun Track walk, our experiences guarantee there will be something for everyone.”
