Alzheimer’s WA are seeking an experienced and passionate counsellor to join our team, initially for a 12-month full-time, fixed-term contract.

As a qualified counsellor, you’ll provide professional, trauma-informed and culturally appropriate dementia-specific counselling services to people living with dementia, their families, and carers, throughout Western Australia to enhance their quality of life.

This role provides the incumbent with opportunities to positively impact individuals and their communities, through a range of Alzheimer’s WA programs.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • providing effective, confidential, and professional dementia-specific counselling services;
  • supporting crisis management where consumers are experiencing a critical incident;
  • providing information and advocacy for consumers in service navigation; and
  • supporting community education and information sharing.

Essential Criteria:

  • tertiary qualification in social sciences or human services field such as Psychology, Social Work, or Counselling;
  • registration with, or eligibility for membership of Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, Australian Counselling Association, Australian Association of Social Workers, or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia;
  • demonstrated counselling experience;
  • knowledge and understanding of the impact of the diagnosis and progression of dementia on individuals and their families;
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills with effective inter-professional collaborative work relationships;
  • demonstrated high standard of organisation (case notes, record keeping and report writing), self-motivation and an ability to work autonomously;
  • demonstrated capability to deliver presentations to a wide community about knowledge of dementia, person-centred care, care services, and assessment;
  • familiarity with Aged Care Assessment Teams and national and state programs;
  • ability to travel to regional areas;
  • working rights in Australia;
  • a valid WA ‘C’ class driver’s licence;
  • an NDIS Worker Screening Check; and
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate.

Desirable Criteria:

  • knowledge and experience of dementia/dementia friendly principles;
  • knowledge of Dementia care services, enabling design principles, environmental impact and design services;
  • experience of working with regional providers;
  • experience working with people living with dementia and their carers;
  • Certificate IV in workplace training and assessment; and
  • Certificate IV in Dementia Practice or higher dementia qualification.
