Work Health and Safety Specialist


Position Summary:

The work, health and safety (WHS) specialist is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment and embedding health and safety into our organisational culture. As part of the People & Culture team, you’ll provide a comprehensive and holistic WHS service by providing guidance on compliance and best practice with regards relevant legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.

This role involves conducting internal inspections, audits and investigations to identify and manage hazards and implementing a regular risk assessment program. The incumbent supports the leadership team to foster a strong safety culture and drive continuous improvement of our WHS practices. This role plays a leading role promoting and embedding a safe, healthy and hazard free working environment for all staff.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing WHS policies and procedures;
  • Provide advice and guidance to managers and stakeholders on WHS obligations;
  • Ensure WHS obligations and compliance are met by way of policies, procedures and guidelines;
  • Conducting risk assessments and identifying potential hazards in the workplace;
  • Conduct internal inspections, audits and investigations to ensuring compliance and reporting as required;
  • Provide recommendations to management on ways to improve workplace health and safety;
  • Establish and implement a program of regular risk assessments;
  • Coach and support management team to foster and promote our safety culture;
  • Manage Workers Compensation claims and return-to-work programs;
  • Developing and delivering WHS training in collaboration with our Education & Consulting team;
  • Ensuring that emergency procedures are in place and workers are trained in emergency response protocols;
  • Coordinating with relevant external WHS advisory services and government regulators, as required; and
  • Ensuring compliance with the relevant Australian legislation.

Essential Criteria:

  • 3+ years’ demonstrated experience in a WHS role with exposure to risk and incident management (ideally in healthcare);
  • Minimum Certificate IV (preferable a Diploma) qualification in Health & Safety Management;
  • demonstrated knowledge of WHS legislation;
  • ability to develop constructive and influential relationships with stakeholders at all levels;
  • demonstrated experience with end-to-end incident reporting and undertaking investigations;
  • track record of improving and championing safety culture that promote WHS whilst supporting the achievement of organisational objectives;
  • valid NDIS Check (or willing to obtain one);
  • current WA driver’s license;
  • unrestricted working rights in Australia; and
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
